Paper size
The paper size consists of the sheet length and its height; these dimensions are covered by the international ISO 216 standard and by North American sizes.
The basic paper size in the international standard is a 1 m² sheet (A0). Subsequent sizes (A1, A2, A3, etc.) are obtained by cutting the paper in half along its longest side.
ISO sizes have an aspect ratio of √2, which creates relationships between sizes. For example, if a sheet is divided into two equal halves parallel to its shortest side, the two halves will also have a √2 ratio.
There is scalability between one size and another: smaller sizes can be obtained from larger ones; for example, an A4 sheet can be obtained from A3, an A3 sheet from A2, and so on.
When discussing paper weight, this means the weight of a sheet in grams. This allows us to easily calculate the weight of products by counting the number of sheets used: a standard 80 g/m² A4 sheet weighs 5 grams.
In addition to the A series, there is the B series for special uses (passports, envelopes and posters). The area of a B-series sheet is the geometric mean of the corresponding A-size sheet: B1 lies between A0 and A1, and its area is 0.71 m² (√0.5). Therefore, B0 is 1 metre long, and the other B-series sizes are one half, one quarter and other fractions of a metre. B5 is often used for books.
Finally, there is a C series defined by ISO 269. The area of C-series sheets is a geometric mean of A- and B-series sheets; therefore, the area of a C4 sheet is the geometric mean of an A4 and a B4. It follows that C4 is slightly wider than A4, and B4 is slightly wider than C4. This series is used almost exclusively for envelopes; for example, a letter written on A4 can be placed inside a C4 envelope, which can in turn be placed inside a B4 envelope.
